The best and most reliable way to copy data from Windows Live Mail (WLM) to another Windows Live Mail installation is by using the built-in Native Export and Import utility.
While it is technically possible to copy the raw database files from the hidden AppData folder, doing so frequently causes index corruption and missing files. Using the official in-app wizard ensures that your email folder structures, messages, and contacts transfer over seamlessly without breaking the database.
Here is the step-by-step process to move your WLM data securely. Phase 1: Export Emails from the Old Computer
Create a New Folder on your desktop or an external flash drive and name it WLM Backup. Launch Windows Live Mail on your old PC. Click the File menu (or the top-left drop-down arrow). Select Export email, then choose Email messages.
Select Microsoft Windows Live Mail as your format and click Next.
Click Browse, select your newly created WLM Backup folder, and click Next.
Choose All folders to copy everything, then click Next to start the export. Click Finish once the process completes. Phase 2: Export Contacts from the Old Computer
In Windows Live Mail, click on the Contacts tab in the bottom-left pane.
Click the Export button at the top ribbon and select Comma Separated Values (.CSV).
Click Browse, name the file Contacts Backup, and save it into your external drive.
Click Next, check the boxes next to all the fields you want to save, and click Finish.
(If you used an external flash drive, plug it into your new computer now.) Phase 3: Import Emails into the New Computer
